"Spaces like this are more than shops — they are lifelines rooted in care, protection and community."
— FKA twigs, Sistah Space Ambassador

The UK's first specialist domestic abuse charity for Black women

Sistah Space was founded in 2015 following the murder of Valerie Forde and her 22-month-old daughter, Baby RJ. Their story exposed how mainstream services were failing Black women — and became the catalyst for everything we do.

For 10 years, we've been providing culturally competent support, advocacy, and practical help to women of African and Caribbean heritage affected by domestic and sexual abuse. From our base in Dalston, we offer specialist services that understand the intersection of racism, gender-based violence, and cultural context.

Our work spans five pillars: specialist support, refuge development, cultural competency training (known as Valerie's Law), our food bank, and this very shop — which reinvests every penny back into frontline services.
